Android Jones Pitch

Last September I put together a pitch book for a 4 issue Android Jones mini series. The incredible Dylan Todd did the design of the book. I sent it around to some publishers and as it's been 7 months or so, I think it's safe to say either no one saw it or no one was interested. So i figured I would share it here for a couple of reasons.

Number one, Dylan did some an amazing job with the design and I want people to see his work.

Number two, I always see people asking for scripts, pitches, etc. If you are new to the business or trying to break in it's nice to have reference material from other people to give you a good idea of what you should be doing or even what NOT to be doing. Obviously since this has not been picked up I can't tell you this is what you should be doing, but maybe it will be helpful in some way.

Number three, maybe people will see this, think it's something they want to read and that could spark enough interest to actually get the book done...Maybe.

Number four, I'm really proud of this pitch and if the book doesn't get made, I wanted people to see what could have been.

See below for the pitch book. I've included it all minus the pitch pages. We used the two AJ short stories Ryan and I did as the pitch pages. If you haven't read those yet check them out HERE and HERE

I've posted other pitches on my site in the past (Blinded, Amulet of Isanove & Dash, Bradbury.) I've never included the full synopsis on those before. I am including it here because I approached the synopsis page differently for this story. I wrote it as if Android Jones himself was doing the pitch. Jones is such a fun character to write, I felt like his personality and general attitude should come through in the pitch document. The only way to really do that was let Jones do all the talking.

Hope you enjoy and if anyone is interested in publishing this thing, in the words of the timeless Carly Rae Jepsen....

Call Me...Maybe?

Here We Go Has Arrived!

Hey Everyone

The printed copies of Here We Go arrived and look great. So proud of the final product. I sent all the packages to the backers of the Kickstarters and so far everyone seems happy with the book, which is great to hear. I've submitted the book to Comixology, so if you missed a chance to back the KS, hopefully you can get a digital version soon. I have heard Comixology can take 6-8 months to get indie books up, so it could be a while. In the meantime, I am looking into some other options to get the book available online for people.

In some other news, I've recently completed work on a pitch called DASH, BRADBURY! I am co-writing this with Tim Daniel and it's illustrated by Nick Johnson with letters by Thomas Mauer. I've talked about this in the past and if you want to see some behind the scenes stuff on the book check out the blog HERE, or HERE. As I've mentioned this is a bit of a spinoff from my short HERE WE GO. I'm really excited about this pitch. It's been a thrill working with Tim, Nick and Thomas and the pages look great. We've sent it off to a publisher so keeping our fingers crossed they like it. In the meantime, check out this awesome cover.

So that's about it for now. I also sent a pitch for Android Jones a couple of weeks back, so hoping to hear some good news on that sooner than later. Waiting really is the toughest part about comics.

If you didn't back the Kickstarter some new shorts are coming. THE SILVER STREET BOYS releases on Tuesday and UNCLE BUCK comes in November, so keep your eye out for those.

Talk to you soon.

Update

Hey Folks

Sorry for the radio silence here, but I think I did mention a while ago that I'm not the best at updating this blog. A lot has happened since the last update. I released 4 shorts (Ex Occultus, Android Jones #2, Forbidden Love & The Devil You Know), successfully funded a Kickstarter for a printed collection of all my shorts and I am close to wrapping up two pitches. So things have been happening, I just talk about it more on Twitter than here.

However I will do my best to be better about that. In the meantime I did want to share something really cool here. I randomly stumbled upon a great artist working for Disney named Matt DeWater. Turns out he's not only from my hometown but went to the same high school as I did too! I really liked his style and tricked him into drawing an Android Jones pinup which you can see below. You should all follow him on Twitter HERE.

Enjoy!

I Can See The Light...

I'm not the best about always updating the blog even though things have been happening. Something to work on for 2014 I think. The end of December saw the release of "The Daring Adventures of Android Jones" #1 and the response has been great. We've gotten some nice reviews and mentions on a few sites which has been nice.

AJ_Fanboy.png

Ryan and I had such a great time with the first one, we went right back to work on a second short which he finished on Monday. As much as I loved the first one, I think this one is even better and Ryan again just knocked it out of the park. As soon as Thomas works his lettering magic, we will unleash this into the wild. Be on the lookout!

Paulina also just finished the colors for the "Ex Occultus" short yesterday so they've been sent off to Deron Bennett to get lettered. I'm really excited to finally get this one released as well. I can't wait for you all to meet Wakefield and Hollander.

Ex Occultus: The Sword of Pelus

Artyom is slowly moving along on our 5 page Western called "Forbidden Love". He is working on the pages in between working on his new Image book called "Undertow", which comes out next month. When it does, please get this book in your hands. I got to read the first issue and it's great. Wait till you see this guy's art, it's amazing. Seeing his "Undertow" pages gets me so excited for our Western.

Update

Hey Everyone

It's been a while so I thought I should give an update, there have been some exciting things going on here at HQ. First off, I've been working on a short called "The Daring Adventures of Android Jones" for a few months with an artist. The short was all roughed out and I've been waiting for the final pages. I just got word a few weeks ago that the artist has to bow out of the project. However the good news is I already have a replacement. I am proud to announce that the incredible Ryan Cody (Doc Unknown) will be working on this short. He is wrapping up some deadlines currently so we are hoping to start the short at the end of this month.

Another short "Ex Occultus: The Sword of Pelus" is almost finished. Joanna Estep just turned in the final inks and they look great. Now they just need to get colored and lettered. Joanna did such a killer job on these pages and I can't wait to see Paulina's colors over them. Hopefully we can wrap this short up soon. The elevator pitch for Ex Occultus is "Indiana Jones meets the Ex Files in the 19th century." Check out this page from Joanna.

Next after searching for an artist for almost two years I've finally found someone to draw my Western short called "Forbidden Love". I am working with Artyom Trakhanov. His currently finishing up some other work so we've been working on this slowly, but he already did full color rough layouts and they look great. It's really cool to see some actual images of this story after all this time. He's working on some character designs right now and then will start working on the pages. Really excited to get this one done.

Finally, work is about to resume on the "Dash, Bradbury" pitch. I've mentioned this before, I am working on this with Tim Daniel (Cursed) and Nick Johnson (Wolf Hands). Tim has been tied up finishing work on Cursed for BOOM! but his deadlines should be done so we can get back to working on the pitch. If you haven't heard about this pitch or maybe you forgot, this is a larger story set in the universe of "Here We Go". See below for a pinup Nick did. Pretty awesome, huh?

So that's it for now. Hope to have more comics to share soon. Talk to you later.

New Project

For all you faithful followers and stalkers of the blog, I know you are well aware (and anxiously waiting) the release of the short "Here We Go". It's coming kiddos, it's coming. Calm down. But I wanted to share some exciting news that is a first for me. I am doing a spin-off!

That's right, I am currently developing a spin-off set in the world and events of "Here We Go". I am working on this story with the incredible Tim Daniel and Nick Johnson. This will be a larger story, but all based on the idea and world that you will see in "Here We Go". After I had the initial idea for "Here We Go", I emailed it to a bunch of close writing friends for feedback and everyone was really excited about the idea, but Tim was REALLY excited about it and it got him thinking about doing something more with it. So he started throwing some ideas at me and asked if I was interested in doing a larger story. Seeing his enthusiasm for the story and all the great thoughts he had for it...it was a no brainer to move forward.

We then began looking for our final collaborator and through a mutual friend we were recommended Nick Johnson. Once Tim and I saw his stuff we both knew he was the guy to help bring this story to life. He's got great design and is really good at storytelling. Once we talked to him about it, he was immediately on board and excited about the project.

So right now, the three of us are working out the story and will soon start working on putting together the pitch.

The title of the new project is called "Dash, Bradbury". Below is a rough sketch Nick did, that Tim then threw a logo and credits on as well as some sketches for some of the villains that might appear in the story.

Enjoy!

"Here We Go": Update

Hello everyone. Things are moving along really nicely on "Here We Go". Anwar has completed all the roughs (which are pretty much full pencils) for the entire short. So now it's on to inks and colors.

Working on this story has been one of the best experiences for me so far working on comics. Anwar has been an amazing collaborator. We've talked daily about the project, we share ideas, try new things, it's been really fun and exciting. This is why I love comics so much. Also, seeing his passion for this project is really motivating for me. Sometimes I am worried artists are working on projects, but it's more about the money than the story. When you find a collaborator who loves the project as much as you do, I believe that will make the project the best it can be.

As much as I love this whole creating process, I am so anxious to get this out for everyone to see. I don't know I've ever been this excited about a story before and I'm really excited about every project I do. I think this is the best short I've written so far and it's also by far the most emotional one. And the emotion is coming through Anwar's drawings as well.

So because I am not the biggest believer in keeping everything secret, I wanted to share the first inked page from the short. I won't share everything because I do want people to discover the fun when you read it as a whole, but I want to give you all a taste of Anwar's amazing work on this book.

Get excited, cause I know I am.

"Here We Go": Page 1 Inks

"Here We Go"

A while back I had posted some artwork for a couple of upcoming shorts, one of which is called "Here We Go." The artist originally attached to this had to back out of the project due to some other deadlines so I began the hunt for another artist. I looked at hundreds of artists and I am proud to say that I've finally found someone. That someone is the incredibly talented, Anwar Madrigal.

Anwar had some nice samples but it was his character design for the Pirate Monkey that won me over. My decision to choose Anwar as the artist was solidified when he sent over the designs for the mother, son and their house. Exactly the kind of style I was imagining for this short. He also just sent over the rough for Page 1 and I can promise you, this is going to be a lot of fun.

"Here We Go" is a 10 page short about a mother and a son. It is his first day going to a new school and he's a bit nervous, so the mother does what she always does when he is nervous or scared. She takes them on an "adventure." On this adventure they will see everything from aliens, dinosaurs and yes, even some Pirate Monkeys.

See below for some of Anwar's awesome character designs. He and I are both really excited about this short and we can't to share it with you. Stay tuned. Hopefully we can release this soon.

Comics are Coming...

The hardest part about making comics is...the waiting. But it's also what makes it kind of fun. Making comics is not instantly gratifying for creators like it is for the reader. I am also a singer/songwriter and over the years have recorded plenty of albums and it's a similar process. You spend a lot of time behind the scene, busting your butt to create something (which all the while all you want to do is share it with people) and you have to wait a long time before you can get that feedback that creative people thrive upon. It's cool being in the moment creating these things but there's nothing like listening to your finished album all the way through for the first time or doing a final read through of your finished comic. That's what makes the whole process worth it. If people like it and respond positively to it, that's just icing on the cake.

Heating_Up_Cover_#2.png

So that's what I've been doing. Working behind the scenes on some things and a couple of them are getting closer to share. First is a 4 page short called "He's Heating Up". This is my small tribute to the game of basketball. I am waiting on the final letters for this and hoping I can get it out within the next week, which would be perfect timing with the NBA Finals going on right now. (Go Heat)

The second project getting closer to being let loose on the world is a weekly web comic that I am doing with George Kambadias. We had so much fun on the "Surprise, Surprise" short, that I knew I had to work with George again. George loves the super hero genre, so we decided to resurrect a pitch called "Blinded" that I worked on a few years ago. Right now we are going to put it out on our own and maybe down the road we will use Kickstarter to try to fund printing hard copies. For now it will just be exciting to have the story finished and out there. We're also going to bring back the rest of the team from "Surprise, Surprise, so Paulina is back on colors and Thomas will be doing the letters. I'm not 100% sure when this will launch. I've been busy working on the website design and George is working on the pages. I think we are going to wait until we have a good back log of pages before we launch. Stay tuned for more details. In the meantime, check out this inked page from George.

Blinded_Blog.png

So that's the latest on my end. I just got the rough layouts from Aleksi on "The Adventures of Android Jones", so that should be coming soon as well. Unfortunately the artist who was working on my "mother/son" short had to back out because of some other projects, so I am back on the hunt for an artist on that. Also the artist I had lined up to work on my Western script has had to push that back till August. A few delays, but that's part of the game and we'll keep moving forward.

Thanks for reading. Talk to you soon.

Character Designs

So I updated a while ago that I am working on some short comics to post here on the site. Things are progressing along. One of the shorts is called "The Daring Adventures of Android Jones". This is a little Sci-Fi Adventure drawn by Aleksi Rokka. You can check out more of his work here. Here are some character designs of Jones along with his robotic sidekick named PIP, along with a colored version that Aleksi finished up to give it a "cover" feel. Aleksi really nailed the look of both characters in these designs. I love the design of Jones, but PIP is my absolute favorite. Just plain awesome! The first short in the Android Jones series is six pages. The first short is written and I started on the second last night. Aleksi is finishing up some other work right now and should get started drawing this the middle of May. Stay tuned.

Character Designs of Android Jones & PIP.

Faux Cover for Android Jones

The 2nd short I've been working on I am calling "Here We Go" for the time being and this story is about a mother and her son on the drive to the first day of school and the "adventure" they go on. Believe it or not this story has aliens,  dinosaurs and Pirate Monkeys. The amazing Randy Bishop is doing art for this and I really can't wait to see what he comes up with. Randy has a short in the upcoming anthology "The Thrilling Adventure Hour" which is being published by the incredible Archaia. You can check out more of Randy's stellar work at his site here.

Below are the first character designs from Randy of the Pirate Monkeys and I think I can properly sum them up with two words. HELL YES! The 2nd is a sample of two finished pages of Randy's story from the Thrilling Hour so you can see what he is capable of. Yeah, needless to say, I am really excited about both of these stories. "Here We Go" right now is coming in at 10 pages. Randy and I are tightening up the script now and then he'll get drawing.

Hope you all enjoy and I can't wait to share the final product with everyone.

Top 10 TV Shows

Inspired by my friend Ryan K. Lindsay who posted a similar list, his got me thinking about my favorite TV shows. Prior to being a dad I used to watch a TON of TV shows but since, there are a lot I've missed out on, so if you notice shows like Mad Men, Sons of Anarchy  Breaking Bad, Homeland, The Wire, Six Feet Under, etc, these are all shows I haven't seen, although I hear they are all fantastic. So anyway, here is my list.

1. Studio 60 (My first Sorkin show. I know a lot of people didn't like it, but this is just THE show for me)

2. Friends (I have watched all 10 seasons multiple times and still laugh everytime I see it on TV)

3. Fringe (I think one of the best Sci-Fi shows ever. Still not ready to accept it's off the air)

4. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia (Been a favorite of mine since the 1st episode. Always makes me laugh.)

5. Seinfeld (A True classic and one that my dad and I watched every episode.)

6. West Wing (After S60 went off, I bought the entire run of this show and such a great example of excellent writing and acting)

7. Lost (Haters are gonna hate but when this show was on I was captivated each and every week)

8. Rescue Me (A Vastly underrated show and proved Dennis Leary has some killer acting chops.)

9. Friday Night Lights (One of those shows with a lot of heart.)

10. Chuck (Hard to pick the last spot, but this was funny, had action and Yvonne Strahovski is really hot)

Honorable mentions go to shows like Prison Break, 24, Entourage, Rome, Game of Thrones, Weeds, Lie to Me, How I Met Your Mother, Firefly, Community and prob more I am forgetting.

Update

Hey folks. Sorry for the lack of posts here. Things are always happening and I talk about all of it on Twitter but then I forget to post about them here.

At the beginning of March I went out to Emerald City Comic Con in Seattle for the second year in a row. It was another amazing trip and although I was pitching anything this year, I actually feel I made more progress with this show then last year. The face to face time is so important in comics and it was nice to further establish relationships with people I interact with on Twitter. Got to hang with a ton of great people and also had some people I really respect say some nice things about my comic work and the approach I am taking, trying to get in. I came back from the trip, more energized than ever.

Since then I've put the final touches on the re-write of the 1st issue for Blinded. George and I are planning on re-launching this as a web comic within the next few months. Brittany Matter has been editing it and her and I have been working hard on re-tooling the previous scripts to make them even better. I can honestly say, this new re-write for Issue #1 is a 1000x better than the original script I wrote and pitched a few years back. George is working on character designs and then soon will start laying out and drawing pages. Can't wait to get this one to everyone.

In other comic news I've just been on the artist hunt again, trying to write some more short stories and continue to build content. Had a couple of really interesting ideas since I got back that I am working on developing. One idea I had over this weekend might have already found an artist which is exciting. I also got an email tonight that I might finally have an artist for the Western short I wrote a while back. Don't want to say anything till it;s confirmed (cause I don't want to jinx it) but I will say that this is an artist I've been dying to work with, he's an established artist and boy oh boy is his art work amazing! So pumped.

So that's about it for now. I'll try to be better about posting but if you want up to date info, follow me on twitter.

Another Robot 6 Feature

The amazing folks over at Robot 6 were kind enough again to feature the latest short, "Surprise, Surprise." They also featured the "Casey at the Bat" short I did last year. Such a cool thing to see something I did on the site alongside lots of other great comic news. So thank you to everyone at CBR & Robot 6 for giving us the feature. We really appreciate it.

It's Coming...

Sorry for the radio silence on here, been a bit more active on Twitter than on the blog. Things have been in motion since the last short was posted, work has just gotten in the way of making sure I posted more frequently on here. Hopefully something I can be better about in 2013.

However in the last month or so I've been working with a new team on another short and it is finished and we should be posting in the next couple of days.

In the meantime, however, please enjoy the cover for the upcoming short.

Enjoy!

Robot 6 Feature

Hey Everyone.

Was pleasantly surprised to find out that Robot 6 featured "Sunday at the Park" on their blog today. I am a big fan of that blog and website so it was pretty amazing to see my name up there. A very big thank you to all who run the site for digging our story and sharing with their readers. We hope everyone liked it.

Screen Shot 2012-10-15 at 9.43.03 PM.png

Sunday at the Park

If you're an avid follower of the blog (and let's be honest, how could you not be?) you might remember last year I posted a script to a short I wrote for a writing contest where I put a Marvel/DC spin on the classic take of "Casey at the Bat". It's always been a fun project in the back of my head that I was searching for an artist to bring to life. After a long search I came across an artist named Ha Huy Hoang aka "Spendid River". He is from Vietnam, but currently studying animation at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. His style was perfect for how I envisioned this to look and he was very excited about the idea. We've been slowly working on this the last few months in between his school schedule, but it is finally finished. It was a lot of fun working on this with him and we had such a great time that we are starting the process of putting together a creator owned pitch, which is very exciting.

Next we brought the amazingly talented Thomas Mauer on board to do the lettering. Thomas did the letters for the Amulet of Isanove pitch and it was an easy decision to bring him back for another project.

So that about sums it up. This has been a fun little project I've been slowly working on for a few years and was just something I thought would be fun to put out there.

Obviously this is not endorsed by Marvel or DC (please don't sue me).

So take a look and please let us know what you think. If you like it I'd appreciate you passing the link on, I'd love to get as many people to see this as possible. If you don't like it, then you obviously have bad taste and pass the link on to someone anyways, because they will more than likely appreciate what you couldn't. Ha! Just kidding.

Hit me up on twitter @writejessewrite or send an email: writejessewrite at gmail dot com. Please visit the blogs of the other talented people involved (see links above) and check out their projects.

Have a great day!

I've moved the pages over to my new site, so check it out here

Surprise, Surprise!

Here is the 2nd script I finished this last week. For those who don't me when it comes to comics I'm am largely a creator owned guy. I read an occasional Marvel/DC book but for the most part they don't do it for me. I also think I am one of the few people trying to break into comics who has no real desire to write for the Big 2. Not to say I wouldn't if it was the right opportunity or story, but that's just not a major goal of mine. I'm more interested in telling my own stories. Right now doing a story with established characters makes sense to me if I can show them doing something different. That was the basis for a writing contest a few years back which led to my "Casey at the Bat" spin I posted last year. The other morning when I was brushing my teeth I had an idea for what is essentially the punchline of a joke or running gag involving Spiderman. He has always been my favorite character since I was a kid so I guess it makes sense. I didn't know if was actually funny, funny just to me, or just really stupid. So I ran the idea by a friend and he enjoyed it so I thought, why not write it down.

I am happy with the way both shorts turned out and I hope you get a kick out of reading them. It is a fun exercise to try to tell a complete story in 5 or 6 pages. I really wanted Spidey to be 5 pages but as I was writing I found that I really needed that extra page. I think in this case it helps make the story stronger.

Enjoy!

"Head over the the scripts page to view these"

Scripts

I've been trying to make an effort to get back into doing things of a creative nature despite how crazy the day job, life and family have been lately. I was reading some tweets from Cullen Bunn the other day about he broke into comics and they got me motivated to write, so I've been working on some short scripts more for fun and practice than anything else. Although I'd love to find an artist to bring these to life to add to my portfolio. In the meantime I though I'd post the scripts here in case anyone is interested in reading them. If any artists are interested in working on these, shoot me an email and we can talk. The first script is a Western called "Forbidden Love"

Enjoy.

Update

Hey Everyone So the blog has been a little light lately. The day job has been exhausting and I've been putting in long hours which gets in the way of anything creative. Also a few weeks ago I moved into a new house, so what free time I had was going into moving, painting, unpacking, blah blah. Again all things that took away time from being creative.

I've also suffered the age old writer problem of artists who get too busy to work on creator owned works. I was in the process of developing some projects with a few artists but their schedules have become too busy at the moment for them to focus on creator owned work. I am hoping we can still work on these down the road but for the time being, they are on hold.

One of my side projects,  my Marvel/DC take on "Casey at the Bat" is back on track. The 5 pages have been inked and now just waiting on colors. Once it's completed I look forward to sharing the pages here.

So that's about it for now. Talk to you all soon.
